          FROM THE EDITOR

Welcome to 11th Council Members of AFS elected during 10th General Assembly held in Yeosu, Korea with Prof. Shoulin Huang of Shanghai Ocean University as the Incoming President (2013-2016). The newsletter provides details of other members of the Council.

As has been detailed in this issue by the immediate past President, Dr. Derek Staples, the Society has made tremendous progress in various activities in the last few years and increased its visibility as evident from the increased membership, making Society’s journal an open access journal, etc. Congratulations to the outgoing Council and Members of the Society who made this possible.

Since the last newsletter, three major events of the Society have taken place – organisation of: (i) the 10th Asian Fisheries and Aquaculture Forum (10th AFAF), (ii) 4th Symposium on Cage Aquaculture in Asia (CAA4), and (iii) 4th Global Symposium on Gender in Fisheries and Aquaculture (GAF4) in Yeosu, Korea during 30 April – 4 May 2013. Gender issues in fisheries and aquaculture are gaining importance as evident from the 4 workshops conducted during GAF4 and donor contribution for organising these workshops.

Fish health management in aquaculture has been and is becoming increasingly important in sustainable management of the sector and in this context the Fish Health Section of the Society has been playing an active role in bringing together all those involved in fish health management in the region and experts from advanced scientific institutions to address the problems facing the sector. The upcoming 4th Symposium on Diseases in Asian Aquaculture (DAA4) scheduled for 24-28 November 2014 in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam is expected to discuss emerging issues in the sector and come up with recommendations.

Taiwan Branch of the Society has been quite active during the period as evident from 3 conferences they held. Realising the importance of genomics research for improvement of production traits in fish, the Indian Branch is organising an expert consultation for developing a road map for genomic research in India, the outcomes of which could be useful for other countries in the region.

Asian Fisheries Social Scientists Research Network (AFSSRN) of AFS has played a significant role in capacity building among Asian scientists in social science research and implementation of a number of projects in 1980s and 1990s. However, for various reasons, the network was inactive in the last decade and efforts are on to reactivate the network. Now the onus lies on the Social scientists of the Society with one of them taking charge as Coordinator of the network. Please see the announcement in this issue.

Finally our journal’s Editor needs to be congratulated for the improved quality and its timely publication. Looking forward to active cooperation of all Members in the activities of the Society.

          Dr M.V. Gupta
