The Taiwan branch (AFS-TB) was the Society's first branch. Founded in September 1985, at the Institute of Fisheries Sciences, National Taiwan University; the branch presently has over 61 active members.
The branch has been actively supporting the Society by generating much needed funds through a series of activities in Taiwan. One way is to host and support the Society’s meetings such as: the 2nd and 9th Council meetings in 1985 and 1991, respectively. The second way is by holding symposia and meetings in Taiwan e.g. the International Symposium on Biotechnology Applications in Aquaculture in 1994, the First International Symposium on Cage Aquaculture in Asia in 1999, the 6th Asian Fisheries Forum in 2001, and the 7th Symposium on Diseases in Asian Aquaculture in 2008. Finally, the AFS-TB fully or partially fund various Society’s publications such as the Society’s Journal – Asian Fisheries Science, books, proceedings as well as AFS Yearbook. The latest scientific publications are three books edited by I Chiu Liao and Eduardo M. Leaño and published jointly by National Taiwan Ocean University, The Fisheries Society of Taiwan, Asian Fisheries Society and World Aquaculture Society. They are entitled: (1) Cobia Aquaculture: Research, Development and Commercial Production (2007, ISBN 978-986-00-8663-8), (2) The Aquaculture of Groupers (2008, ISBN 978-986-01-4431-7), and (3) Milkfish Aquaculture in Asia (2010, ISBN 978-986-02-2610-2).
More than sixty scientists and members participated Asian Forum of Aquaculture and Fisheries held in Shanghai Ocean University, Shanghai, China on April 20-24, 2011. Annual scientific meeting of Fisheries Society of Taiwan was held in National Sun Yat-Sen University, Kaohsiung, Taiwan on December 3, 2011, and more than 300 papers were presented. Three fisheries science scientists, Professors Ryo Kawabe, Gregory N. Nishihara, and Yu Umezawa visited National Taiwan Ocean University on January 10, 2012, and addressed speech in the College of Life Sciences in marine fish through electronic tags, marine macrophyte biodiversity, and human impact on marine ecosystem. Eight scientists and members attended Taiwan-Japan Symposium on Emerging in Aquatic Immunity and Aquatic Biotechnology which was held in Cheng-Kung University, Tainan, Taiwan on February 21-22, 2012. Professors Takashi Aoki, Yoshitaka Sakakura, Ikuo Hirono, Kiyoshi Kikuchi, Takashi Sakamoto, Goro Yoshizaki, Kenji Saitoh, Tadaaki Moritomo from Japan side, Professors I Chiu Liao, Nan-Hsien Chao, Ching-Fong Chang, Jen-Leih Wu, Huey-Lang Yang, Pung-Pung Hwang, Chu-Fang Lo, and Han-Ching Wang, and Jiann-Chen Chen from Taiwan side made a talk in this event. Also a world famous scientist, Professor Kenneth Söderhäll attended this event and addressed a speech. Dr. Winton Cheng, an AFS member organized a symposium on Fish Feed Nutrition and Larval Production in National Pingtung University of Science and Technology on May 18, 2012. More than 200 participants attended this symposium. Many scientists and members including Dr. Shi-Yen Shiau, Dr. Ron-Fu Huang, Dr. Shin-Li Yeh, Mr. Peter Chiang, Mr. Chin-Pin Liu, and Mr. Yi-Ho Lin attended this event and addressed speech. Dr. Ching-Fong Chang has become the President of National Taiwan Ocean University since August 1, 2012. Annual scientific meeting of Fisheries Society of Taiwan will be held in National Taiwan Ocean University on January 2013.
